Bungie is significantly changing Marathon’s direction following player feedback, with the extraction shooter set to receive permanent PvE, a progression reset, and several new ways to play.
The studio has delayed its next major update from Sept. 22 to Dec. 8, when the Symbiosis update will introduce Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience. Bungie is also moving away from a strict seasonal schedule, giving its development team more flexibility to build, test and adjust major features before release.
In an update on its site, Bungie said “Since launch, you’ve told us Marathon needs more depth, more variety, stronger progression, and better reasons to keep playing over the long term. We agree. Addressing that feedback requires us to change both what we’re building and how we deliver it.”
Marathon’s Overhaul Starts With a Progression Reset
The first stage of the overhaul arrives Oct. 6 with the Nightfall Refresh. Rather than waiting until December for the larger Symbiosis update, Bungie will reset player progression and the in-game economy, giving everyone a fresh starting point.
Bungie said Season 2: Nightfall launched with progression and reward problems that allowed some players to reach the endgame faster than intended while leaving others behind. According to the studio, that made the extraction experience harder to engage with and meant the progression reset didn’t work as intended.
The October update will also add a new Rewards Pass, quality-of-life improvements and live balance changes. Vault Breaker, Marathon’s limited-time PvE experiment, will return during this period to give Bungie additional data about how PvE activities can fit into the game’s progression system.
Bungie plans to use the eight weeks between the October and December updates for further gameplay experiments. The studio says it’ll share what it learns during that period, including how player feedback influences development.
Symbiosis Moves Marathon Beyond Extraction
The larger change arrives Dec. 8 with Symbiosis, Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, allowing players to explore and progress without relying exclusively on the game’s traditional PvPvE extraction structure. Symbiosis will also add a refreshed Perimeter experience, a new Runner shell, a social space with a firing range, an experimental Team Deathmatch mode and improvements to the new-player experience.
The move follows experiments that Bungie began earlier in 2026. Bungie’s May development update had already outlined plans to explore more pure PvP, PvE, and PvP-lite experiences, alongside efforts to make Marathon less grindy, improve matchmaking and smooth out its onboarding.
This was followed in Season 2 by the studio introducing Sponsored Survival, a lower-pressure mode that reduced the emphasis on PvP while retaining elements of Marathon’s extraction gameplay. Bungie said at the time that experiments could potentially inform permanent additions or new core gameplay systems.
Why Is Bungie Changing Marathon?
The overhaul comes after Marathon launched with a core built around PvPvE extraction gameplay, a format that puts players under pressure to collect resources and successfully escape while competing against other teams.
Bungie’s latest update reveals that this structure alone hasn’t provided enough depth or long-term variety for some players. The studio’s decision to add permanent PvE and Team Deathmatch is its way to give players more reasons to stick around between the game’s default extraction runs.
The change also comes during a difficult period for Bungie. Sony acquired Bungie in 2022 and then laid off at least 292 Bungie employees in June this year, with the cuts affecting most of the Destiny team and some Marathon developers. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hermen Hulst subsequently said in an internal email that “Marathon remains an important part of our portfolio, and we will continue to support the team as they build on the strong foundation established in Season 1 and 2, and as they work on incubation efforts for future projects.”
Marathon Is Moving Away From Seasonal Deadlines
Perhaps the most significant change isn’t a new mode at all. Bungie is abandoning its strict seasonal schedule, meaning major updates won’t necessarily be tied to predetermined seasonal deadlines.
Bungie says Symbiosis is only the beginning of a broader evolution that will continue through March and beyond. A future development blog is expected later in September and will explain how the team intends to make Marathon a “more alien and dynamic” survival experience.
The response from the game’s community has been mixed. Some players on Reddit have welcomed the additional time and broader feature set, while others have interpreted the delay and expansion of scope as evidence that Marathon is being rebuilt around problems that should have been addressed earlier.
The Last Word
It’s difficult to not look at this news through the lens of how other AAA live service games, like EA’s Anthem and Bungie’s own Destiny 2, have been delisted or ended development. However, Marathon moving away from fixed seasonal deadlines does give Bungie more time to experiment with Marathon’s direction, something other online multiplayer titles rarely get the chance to do.
The result could be a broader game that appeals beyond dedicated extraction-shooter players. While Bungie hasn’t described the changes as a relaunch, the scale of what’s planned makes Symbiosis an important test for the game’s future and a chance to foster stronger long-term engagement.
