Sony entered the world of handheld gaming for the first time in 2004 with the introduction of the PlayStation Portable (PSP). Released in Japan in 2004 before a worldwide release in 2005 the handheld saw spin-offs of classic PlayStation franchises such as Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Metal Gear Solid, and many more. The handheld sold around 80 million units over its 10-year lifespan along with millions of copies of games. What is the top selling PSP game of all time? 9. Monster Hunter Freedom 2 – 2.4 Million Units

3. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd – 4.9 Million Units
After two successful handheld adaptations, Monster Hunter returned to the PSP with Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. Gamers are taken to Yukumo Village where they have more training options to explore as compared to previous handheld versions of Monster Hunter. Another new feature gave gamers the ability to take two Felynes on a quest. This doubled the amount from Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Felyne companions’ equipment also became customizable by gamers.
The weapon classes from the previous games were all made available in Monster Hunter Portable 3rd. The equipment creation and fortification systems received an overhaul as compared to previous portable editions of Monster Hunter.
Overall the game received positive reviews and sold a good number of units. It comes in as the third top selling PSP game of all time, despite not being released worldwide.

2. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories – 5.03 Million Units
The spin-off of Grand Theft Auto Vice City was released in 2006 on the PlayStation Portable. Gamers explore the Miami-inspired world as Corporal Vic Vance. Vic is in need of cash to pay for his brother’s medicine. He begins to work with his Sergeant, Jerry Martinez, and enters the drug trading world of Vice City.
Early into the campaign, Jerry betrays Vic, getting him kicked out of the Army. Vic takes this opportunity to take over a gang and become a leader. His other brother Lance arrives in town as well, aiding Vic. In the process of taking over a gang, Vic meets Louise. The wife of the former leader of the gang Vic took over. She later dies in the campaign and Vic and Lance decide to leave Vice City and the drug trade behind to take the money they have earned to their sick brother.
The game was generally well-received by critics and gamers alike. Vice City Stories was ported to the PlayStation 2 in 2007. THe PlayStation 2 version was digitally ported to the PlayStation Store for purchase to play on the PlayStation 3.
1. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories – 8 Million Units
Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories rounds out the list as the top selling PSP game of all time. Similar to Vice City Stories the game takes place prior to the main console release. Gamers are dropped into the New York-inspired city of Liberty City.
Players are put into the shoes of Toni Cipriani, a mobster who was forced out of Liberty City for four years due to murdering a made man. Toni returns and is assigned as a low-ranking member of the Leone family.
He soon learns that another mafia underboss Massimo Torini is putting a plan together to have smaller gangs join together to move on Leone territory. Toni then becomes a made man in the Leone family after helping Salvatore Leone navigate the issue.
As the story unfolds the Leones become the most powerful mafia in Liberty City. However, a threat is still at large in the form of Toni’s uncle who is targeting Salvatore prior to his trial. Toni eliminates that threat and is made a caporegime in exchange for his service to Salvatore.
Like Vice City Stories the game was released digitally on the PlayStation 3 for download. The game was generally well received and did great sales numbers for the PlayStation Portable.
