2. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 – 13.80 Million Units

Continuing with the Call of Duty theme, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 comes in as the second best top selling PS3 game of all time. Black Ops 2 was released a year after Modern Warfare 3 and is a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops.

For the first time in the Call of Duty, franchise gamers could make decisions during the campaign that affect outcomes, similar to that of a role-playing game. The choices were available in the futuristic missions that put gamers in the boots of David Mason son of Alex Mason. Alex Mason is the protagonist from the first Black Ops and is the antagonist in the cold war era missions in Black Ops 2.

The zombies’ mode made a return, allowing gamers to team up and take on a healthy dose of zombies.

Several changes were made to the multiplayer modes. A Pick 10 option was added to create a class giving gamers the option to have 10 slots for guns, grenades, and perks. The weapons progression system was also changed to have a prestige mode similar to the player ranking system.

A competitive mode called League Play was also added for the first time in franchise history. Games were played under Major League Gaming rules and were for gamers of similar and higher skill.

For the first time in GTA history, more than one playable protagonist was available. Gamers alternated between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor as the three characters’ paths intersect as the story unfolds. Like previous releases, the story has multiple endings depending on a critical choice that gamers make in the story.

Grand Theft Auto Online was also developed as part of the GTA V release. Gamers were able to make their own character to enter Los Santos and play in an open-world setting similar to that of the campaign.

GTA V received critical acclaim from gamers and critics alike and saw strong sales on multiple platforms. The long-awaited sequel is still to be announced.
