Xbox Revenue Drops Again Despite Microsoft’s Billion-Dollar Growth

Xbox Revenue Drops Again Despite Microsoft’s Billion-Dollar Growth

Andre Custodio October 29, 2026

Microsoft released the financial results for the first quarter of its 2027 fiscal year on Wednesday (28), covering the period ending September 30, 2026. While the company posted strong growth across its broader business, the Xbox division once again reported weaker results compared to the same period a year earlier.

Xbox Content and Services Revenue Also Declines

According to the report, Xbox’s total revenue fell from $5.508 billion to $5.379 billion, a decline of roughly 2.3%. That represents a decrease of $129 million compared to the first fiscal quarter of 2026.

The result stands out because it comes at a time when Microsoft as a whole continues to expand financially, driven mainly by its cloud computing services and enterprise solutions.

One of the key metrics in the report is Xbox content and services revenue, a category that includes gaming-related businesses, digital content, and subscriptions.

In this segment, Microsoft reported a 2% year-over-year decline, which narrows to 1% when the impact of foreign exchange fluctuations is taken into account. The result shows that the downturn was not limited to console sales, also affecting an area that has become increasingly important to Xbox’s current strategy.

However, the report does not provide individual figures for Xbox Game Pass or game sales, making it impossible to determine which specific products or services had the biggest impact on the results.

Although the report includes Xbox’s total revenue, Microsoft did not break out hardware performance separately. That means the available data does not make it possible to determine exactly how much console revenue increased or decreased during the quarter.

The lack of this information also makes it difficult to directly evaluate Xbox Series X|S sales performance compared to the same period last year. So while the division as a whole posted a decline, the report does not provide enough detail to assign a specific percentage drop to console sales.

Last Word on Xbox Fall

While Xbox continues to face challenges, Microsoft’s overall financial performance remains on a strong growth trajectory.

The company reported $92.3 billion in quarterly revenue, up 19% year over year. Operating income reached $45.9 billion, an increase of 21%, while net income rose 32% to $36.6 billion. Among the strongest performers was Microsoft Cloud, which generated $63.9 billion in revenue, up 30%. Azure, meanwhile, grew by 48%.

The figures highlight a contrast: while Microsoft’s enterprise and cloud businesses continue to drive the company’s growth, Xbox is still struggling to keep pace.

The report does not detail the specific reasons behind the gaming division’s decline, but it makes clear that Xbox’s performance remains far behind the positive results seen across other parts of Microsoft’s business.
