GTA 6 has taken a big step in the gaming industry. No discs for collectors. That’s right. The video game behemoth is discontinuing the disc trend. GTA 6 is eyeing a November 19 launch date. Pre-orders across the globe have already started, sparking debate on the price listing. While some franchise fans are justifying the Ultimate Edition price tag, others are staunchly against it. Another controversial move that has taken the internet by storm is the fact that GTA 6 will no longer have a disc, even if you buy the physical edition of the game.

Will GTA 6 Be The End of Discs?
Those who like a collector’s feeling still prefer physical copies of games to digital purchases. In select stores, the physical edition of the game will be available for purchase starting November 12, a week before launch. However, when you buy that edition, there will be no disc inside. Instead, you will find a code that you can then use to download the game upon release. Some are disappointed in this decision as it defeats the purpose of buying a physical edition.
Considering how big of a deal Rockstar’s new project is, could this be the end of disc games altogether? The sixth numerical title in the Grand Theft Auto series is the biggest game of this generation, with a budget exceeding many other AAA games, along with the years of development and delays it took to finally release this game. Other competing development studios have already cleared November 2026 from their release schedule because it looks like they don’t wish to compete with GTA 6’s release. If this title has so much power over the industry, other studios might follow in its footsteps and stop producing disc copies, marking the end of a much-loved era.
The primary debate here is not the fact that a studio as big as Rockstar is trying to cut costs. Instead, “digital only” purchases raise one major concern: the consumer may not have full authority over owning a title and licensing disputed in the future may take away your game forever, despite the fact that you paid for said game. Perhaps if the community keeps voicing its opinion, the industry may not make this controversial decision the new normal.
