Cyberpunk 2, codenamed Project Orion, is gaining momentum as more people from the CD Projekt Red team are brainstorming ways to make it bigger and more immersive. During a recent AnsweRED Podcast, Vice President and Game Director Gabe Amatangelo explained how he is open to insights from other members. His goal is to collaborate with others, note their opinions, and build a video game that reflects the team’s heart and soul.
Cyberpunk 2 does not have an official release date. First announced on October 4, 2022, it entered pre-production in May 2025 and is expected to release by 2030.
CD Projekt Red’s Vision for Cyberpunk 2
Gabe Amatangelo recently shared how his concept for the sequel is evolving. In Episode 33 of AnsweRED Podcast, the experienced Game Director answered several questions about CD Projekt Red’s vision alongside Igor Sarzyński, the Creative Director of Cyberpunk 2. The duo spoke at length about video games, their early works for CDPR, and the reception of the Phantom Liberty DLC.
The topic switched to Cyberpunk 2 towards the end of the video. Gabe explained how his initial vision for the upcoming title has changed as more people are involved in the creative process, making it the collective “hearts and souls” of a growing team.
“I had the idea of Cyberpunk 2 in the beginning, but it evolves as I involve more people. And it evolves as I empower the team and individuals within it to contribute… It becomes something else, right? It becomes this thing that I’ve shepherded, but it’s ultimately a reflection of the team’s hearts and souls. And I look forward to sharing that.”
Gabe was the Game Director for the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. He insisted on making many changes, such as the number of suitcases in Dogtown, simply because it wasn’t a tourist destination. His focus on minute details and responsible development could make Cyberpunk 2 bigger and more immersive than its predecessor in many ways.
Since there are many definitions of cyberpunk, Gabe has impartially noted the opinions of the development team for the upcoming game.
“Punk means different things to different people, but the core is the ability to pose questions. “Questioning things was just part of my growing up. And the cyber part of it is both exaggeration and expression, neon lights and loud noises. It’s about exploring the extremes of dehumanization.”
While fans wait for Cyberpunk 2, the Netflix-exclusive Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 series is confirmed to hit the screens on October 20, 2026.
Last Word on Cyberpunk 2
Gabe Amatangelo involving more people in the planning process for Cyberpunk 2 is great news for fans of the franchise. Opening up early decision-making to a broader team will undoubtedly expand upon the ideas of the original game and build a foundation for the next.
CDPR may also take note of the entire team’s view on ‘cyberpunk’ and create distinct background paths for the protagonist of Cyberpunk 2, complete with branching storylines, path-exclusive side missions, and NPC reactions tailored to the long-term choices and actions of the main character. The story is likely to be set in Night City, the dystopian metropolis of the Cyberpunk universe.
