God of War Egypt has been in the rumor mill for years since the grand reception of God of War: Ragnarok. After the Norse saga, the franchise seems poised to enter the desert realm of gods to make Kratos face the likes of Osiris and Anubis. He has already encountered many beasts from Egyptian mythology during his canonical wanderings in the Fallen God comic, and there are more hints about the potential next saga in the mainline games.
God of War Laufey is expected to reveal more about the Egyptian setting. The brief gameplay segment during this year’s PlayStation State of Play has already given a teaser about God of War Egypt, showing one of the gods mentioning Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war.
God of War Egypt: All Clues About Kratos’ Saga in the Land of the Pharaohs
A connection between the God of War lore and Egypt has been teased in several novelizations of the games. In the 2005 novelization of God of War, Ares is seen causing chaos in a desert region. Similarly, in the God of War II novel, Hermes is exiled to a desert, which could be in the Land of the Pharaohs.
There are more clues about the potential next saga of Kratos and Atreus.
Egypt was pitched as a potential setting
Santa Monica Studio decided to reboot God of War after the culmination of Kratos’ vengeance over Zeus and other Greek gods. During early pre-production, the internal team was divided on the direction. While one half of the team favored an Egyptian setting, the other favored a Norse setting.
Director Cory Barlog made a vote in favor of the Norse setting. During Devcom 2018, Barlog disclosed two pieces of concept art related to the possible Egyptian setting, one featuring Kratos advising Atreus to shoot a gigantic creature in a sandy land. Atreus can be seen wearing linen wraps and shooting an arrow in a monster’s chest.
Given that there are concept arts for God of War Egypt, the studio might be building on it. The harsh wilderness of Egypt, along with the many Egyptian gods, could give a veteran Kratos and teenage Atreus a formidable challenge.
Kratos interacted with Thoth
The four-issue God of War: Fallen God comic captures Kratos’ story after the events of God of War III. After killing Zeus, Kratos sails to Egypt and constantly tries to get rid of the Blades of Chaos. He encounters various creatures in the desert land, including an ibis and a baboon, and interacts with an old man who keeps guiding him in his adventures.
In Issue 4, the ibis, the baboon, and the old man turn out to be Thoth, the god of wisdom and magic. Kratos had visions of both Thoth and Athena, both deities helping the former Spartan get over his past and begin a new life.
Tyr’s adventures in Egypt
In God of War (2018), vaults of Týr’s Temple contain Egyptian treasures such as a scarab, a pschent, and a pharaoh’s crook and flail. Mimir mentions that Týr had travelled to Egypt so he could learn about the land’s culture and perspectives, potentially coming across gods belonging to the region.
In the God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla DLC, one of the fights with Týr features the latter wielding two Khopesh. These swords are native to the land of Egypt, indicating that Týr may have learned some fighting techniques during his excursion to the Land of the Nile.
Sekhmet in God of War Laufey
A 20-minute footage of God of War Laufey was revealed during PlayStation State of Play. It shows Laufey (Faye) waking up in the multi-mythological realm of Everywhen following her death in Midgard. As she verbally spars with Mongolian war god Begtse, their confrontation is interrupted by Sekhmet.
Last Word on God of War Egypt
Several clues are leading to God of War Egypt, so it is only a matter of time before Santa Monica Studio reveals the next saga. The upcoming God of War Laufey is expected to lay the groundwork by introducing multi-mythological lore. While Sekhmet has already been revealed in the PlayStation State of Play footage, other prominent Egyptian deities, such as Thoth, could play major roles in the game.
