The third entry in the Modern Warfare era of Call of Duty was released in 2011. The campaign was divided into three acts for gamers to make their way through. The campaign picked up directly after the events of Modern Warfare 2 and featured the return of Task Force 141.
A new horde-type co-op mode called “Survival” was also introduced in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. Gamers reamed up in teams of two to take on waves of enemies that became progressively more challenging.
As with many Call of Duty games a big focus was put on the multiplayer mode. The Call of Duty Elite system was carried over from Black Ops, making its debut in a Modern Warfare game. It gave gamers the opportunity to look at their lifetime stats and included monthly downloadable content.
Modern Warfare 3 received generally positive reviews from gamers and critics alike. The Modern Warfare saga continued with Advanced Warfare, as well as a reboot of Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2.

2. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 – 13.80 Million Units
Continuing with the Call of Duty theme, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 comes in as the second best top selling PS3 game of all time. Black Ops 2 was released a year after Modern Warfare 3 and is a direct sequel to Call of Duty: Black Ops.
For the first time in the Call of Duty, franchise gamers could make decisions during the campaign that affect outcomes, similar to that of a role-playing game. The choices were available in the futuristic missions that put gamers in the boots of David Mason son of Alex Mason. Alex Mason is the protagonist from the first Black Ops and is the antagonist in the cold war era missions in Black Ops 2.
The zombies’ mode made a return, allowing gamers to team up and take on a healthy dose of zombies.
Several changes were made to the multiplayer modes. A Pick 10 option was added to create a class giving gamers the option to have 10 slots for guns, grenades, and perks. The weapons progression system was also changed to have a prestige mode similar to the player ranking system.
A competitive mode called League Play was also added for the first time in franchise history. Games were played under Major League Gaming rules and were for gamers of similar and higher skill.
Black Ops 2 was generally well-received by gamers and critics alike and had two more direct sequels released.
1. Grand Theft Auto V – 20.32 Million Units
Grand Theft Auto V comes in as the top selling PS3 game of all time. With an impressive 20 million units sold, this was the first system to feature GTA 5. The game would later be released on eighth and ninth-generation consoles.
For the first time in GTA history, more than one playable protagonist was available. Gamers alternated between Michael, Franklin, and Trevor as the three characters’ paths intersect as the story unfolds. Like previous releases, the story has multiple endings depending on a critical choice that gamers make in the story.
Grand Theft Auto Online was also developed as part of the GTA V release. Gamers were able to make their own character to enter Los Santos and play in an open-world setting similar to that of the campaign.
GTA V received critical acclaim from gamers and critics alike and saw strong sales on multiple platforms. The long-awaited sequel is still to be announced.
