Until Dawn Developer Hit With Over 70 Layoffs

Spandan Chatterjee October 6, 2026

Supermassive Games, the developers behind Until Dawn, The Quarry, and The Dark Pictures Anthology, has been hit with massive layoffs. Over 70 members of the staff have been released across multiple departments. The news was shared by Frank Tindle, who worked in the IT department of the studio for 16 years and became a senior member of the team.

In August, a redundancy consultation revealed that over 75 employees were at risk of losing their work. This was said to be essential for ensuring the company’s long-term progress and sustainability. Now, the changes in the studio have been initiated, with many senior members being let go.

Until Dawn Developer Supermassive Games Lays off More Than 70 Employees

The big layoffs were disclosed by Frank Tindle, former IT and Facilities Director of Supermassive Games. He posted on LinkedIn on October 5, 2026, mentioning how he knew that his job was at risk before his eventual exit from the studio. Frank started in 2010 and left Supermassive Games as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, and during his tenure, the studio grew from a handful to more than 400 staff.

Notably, the layoffs include developers, artists, producers, members of the operations team, and more. Supermassive Games has not officially released a statement about the recent exits.

This marks the studio’s second major wave of downsizing. In February 2024, 90 employees lost their jobs, a month after co-founders Pete and Joe Samuels stepped down from the company. The employees were informed of the potential layoffs.

Nordisk Games, the parent company of Supermassive Games, hasn’t issued a statement. That said, the restructuring could be attributed to rising production costs and shifting priorities in the gaming industry, which may impact more of the workforce in the future.

More about Supermassive Games

The first work of Supermassive Games was a DLC for LittleBigPlanet. It then landed a partnership with BBC to release Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock and Wonderbook: Walking with Dinosaurs.

The studio’s biggest breakthrough came with Until Dawn in 2015. Inspired by slasher films, this survival-horror experience garnered a lot of praise from critics and players alike. Multiple spin-offs related to the Until Dawn franchise were released in the subsequent years, including Until Dawn: Rush of Blood and The Inpatient, both for PlayStation VR.

After the success of Until Dawn, Supermassive Games stuck to the horror genre in video gaming. The studio released The Dark Pictures Anthology alongside Bandai Namco Entertainment for the then-modern consoles. The Anthology includes Man of Medan (2019), Little Hope (2020), House of Ashes (2021), The Devil in Me (2022), and Directive 8020 (2026).

Amid the installments for the Anthology, the studio released The Quarry in 2022. The choice-based horror game received mostly positive reviews and even got nominated in the Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards.
