God of War: Laufey was announced at State of Play in June 2026. The 20-minute gameplay reveal had a mixed reception. Some fans were upset that Santa Monica Studios may be steering away from Kratos. However, the studio has assured its old fans that they will always have stories to tell about the Greek God. A major disappointment, though, was the announcement that Sony will be discontinuing disc copies for its first-party studio games starting in 2028. So, with God of War Laufey yet to release, will the latest God of War adventure have a disc edition at release?
Will God of War Laufey Have A Physical Disc?
There was an important announcement at San Diego Comic Con about God of War Laufey. The game has a 2027 release date, which implies that it may have a disc, but GTA 6’s “no disc” policy has shaken the gaming industry. Good news, though: God of War Laufey has confirmed that it will come with a physical disc! That’s right. Those who buy the physical edition of the game will receive a disc for their respective PS5 consoles, unlike GTA 6, which will only give digital codes in the physical edition of the game.
But it looks like Santa Monica will be adhering to the “console wars” as guided by Sony. The video game industry giant has made its first-party exclusives only available on PlayStation, starting with Insomniac’s Wolverine. This means no PC ports for them either, let alone a potential Xbox port.
Although not a sequel to 2022’s God of War Ragnarok, the upcoming game takes players in a different direction. It follows Laufey the Just, Atreus’ mother and Kratos’ wife, after her unfortunate sudden demise at the start of the 2018 game. She wakes up in a new plane of existence called The Everywhen – an afterlife for Gods. Played by Hollywood actress Deborah Ann Woll, known for her role as Karen Paige in the hit Marvel shows Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again, Faey will uncover the mystery of this new surreal location and take the fight to the Gods of War from different pantheons.
