Steam/PC Hit Dressmaker Changes Job Simulation Genre For Good

Video gaming is nothing if not a cycle of games breaking the mould and becoming a hit before inspiring some similar titles. Stardew Valley sparked the fire that was the Life Sim/Farming Sim mix that persists to this day. Job Simulation games are another that have been copying the same source material for some time. Managing a store has become a 3D management experience that most sees most games regurgitate the same mechanics on repeat. That could be coming to an end as Dressmaker has recently burst onto the scene. The PC game has been a hit with players over on Steam with over 11,000 reviews to date and an all-time peak of 43,000 players.

Dressmaker Could Change PC & Steam Job Simulation Releases For The Better

A New Spin

What Dressmaker did well is incorporating cozy elements. The job simulation scene has previously been about juggling everything, running the store, managing upgrades, making sure there’s stock, and more. It is an anxious experience that’s more management and running aorund to mirror the reality of actual store manegement.

What Dressmaker does is make things cozy, focusing on the smaller details. Similar to older games like Cooking Mama it allows you to go into the finer details, taking you through even the smallest aspects of making a dress. This version of job simulation games is something that’s beginning to take shape but hadn’t yet had enough success to influence newer titles.

Dressmaker is the one that’s broken through. It’s popularity and the mechanics it introduces are hopefully going to influence a new wave of job sim, management sim games to be more cozy, more focused, and to offer something different than the bigger, more monetary-focused experience the games have been taking on.

The Last Word

The cycle of video games is continuing to move, while the AAA industry is currently suffering from remakes and larger wait times between titles, the indie scene and Steam continue to innovate. Dressmaker is a game that could enhance the Job Simulation genre and move it on from the repetition that has plagued one of the best subgenres on the scene.
