God of War Laufey Has Been In Development For Nearly 10 Years

The PlayStation State of Play on June 2 this year revealed many surprise titles, including God of War Laufey. The standalone successor of the God of War “Norse saga” had an uninterrupted 20-minute gameplay showcase at the event. Through the first 20 minutes of the gameplay, it was clear that the main story follows Laufey, The Just, in the “Everywhen”, the afterlife for all Gods. The place is flooded with Gods from different pantheons from across the world, and we even get a glimpse at Sekhmet and Begtse, the Egyptian and Mongolian Gods of War, respectively, who are hostile towards the protagonist.

Despite the success of the franchise and Faey’s involvement in guiding Kratos through his journey during the two Norse games, God of War Laufey faced a harsh reception following the reveal. Several fans criticized the creative decision to stray away from everyone’s favorite Greek God of War as the protagonist. Turns out, this wasn’t a last-minute decision, but an idea that has been in development for nearly 10 years!

It Took Nearly 10 Years To Publicly Reveal God of War Laufey

Deborah Ann Woll, the actress who plays Karen Page in the hit TV show Daredevil and Daredevil: Born Again, is the face and voice for Laufey in the God of War games. The 2018 God of War “reboot” revolved heavily around Faey’s death, but didn’t feature her. During Game Con Canada, while talking to CGM, Woll revealed that this is when Cory Barlog first approached her, pitching the standalone game idea.

“He pitched it to me in 2018, and they had known about it before then. It’s wild. Like when Cory brought me in to talk about doing Ragnarök and show me the 2018 game, he already had a poster for the Laufey game with me and a cube. A cube that’s been there since the beginning. It’s deeply a part of the lore.”

She was pitched this idea back in 2018, but there’s a chance that it may have been internally planned longer than that. Finally, one of Deborah’s “favorite” projects is coming to life. While we don’t yet have a release date for the game, it is expected to be released sometime in the first half of 2027. However, if you are a Kratos fan, don’t be disappointed, the stoic warrior will always be featured in the God of War series.
