Inside Secret of the Mimic—FNaF’s Creepy New Chapter

Published on:

The wait is over—Steel Wool Studios and ScottGames have officially unveiled the trailer for Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic, a new indie adventure set in the ever-creepy Fazbear universe. The game launches on June 13, 2025, and you can play it on PS5, Steam and Epic Games. For those brave enough, the experience will also be available on PlayStation VR2, adding an extra layer of immersion—and terror.

What’s Going On in the Secret of the Mimic Trailer?

The trailer kicks off with a voice crackling over a radio—someone trying to calmly explain a very not-calm situation. Edwin Murray, a reclusive inventor and former contractor for Fazbear Entertainment, has disappeared without a trace. He left behind not just an eerie, abandoned warehouse he once owned, but also something far more dangerous: a one-of-a-kind endoskeleton capable of adapting to any costume. It also could become any character. While Fazbear may now control the property, the creation itself remains entirely Murray’s.

You, the player, enter into what’s now called Murray’s Costume Manor to retrieve the experimental tech and uncover the mystery behind his disappearance. The only problem? The machine might be malfunctioning. You’re warned of potential injuries—death or dismemberment, very casually included. Still, management insists everything should go smoothly. That said, you’re told to “get your affairs in order”… just in case.

From there, the trailer shifts into full gear. Glimpses show a towering robot,  glowing blue-green eyes and the player using terminals, pulling levers, and dodging animatronics lurking in every shadowy corner. You’ll explore the twisted remains of Edwin’s unfinished work while trying to stay ahead of the monster he left behind. It’s shaping up to be another chaotic, claustrophobic, Fazbear nightmare-and it’s already looking unforgettable.

How does Secret of the Mimic fit into the Five Nights at Freddy’s timeline?

The Mimic first appeared in the Tales from the Pizzaplex book series, where its creepy backstory started to unfold. Secret of the Mimic acts as a prequel to the mainline FNaF games, building a direct connection to Security Breach and its DLC, Ruin—where the Mimic made its first in-game appearance. Like those titles, Secret of the Mimic pulls inspiration from the Tales from the Pizzaplex books, continuing the trend of blending book lore with gameplay. Set in 1979, the game dives into the events leading up to the Mimic’s creation and unpacks the mystery behind the disappearance of its inventor, Edwin Murray.

Let’s talk about gameplay—what are we getting into?

The trailer shows a freely explorable 3D world, like Security Breach with more room to roam and panic. Players still rely on cameras and tools to survive, but the Mimic’s unpredictability adds tension as you search for clues in Murray’s Costume Manor. New animatronics—including an elephant, a puppy, and a human girl—add fresh nightmare fuel.
