The Nintendo 64 catalog on the Nintendo Switch Online service has just gotten a little bigger. Only July 8, it was announced that Pokémon Puzzle League, the classic N64 puzzle game, will be added to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack. This makes only the second game in the long-running franchise to hit the N64 catalog, the first being Pokémon Snap, which arrived last month. NSO Online Expansion Pack subscribers can play Pokémon Puzzle League starting today, July 15.

What to Know About N64 Puzzle Game for Nintendo Switch Online
Based on the popular anime starting Ash Ketchum and his friends, Pokémon Puzzle League sees the characters travel to the Pokémon Puzzle League Village. Prior to this, Professor Oak informs Ash that he’s been selected as one of the challengers for the tournament. Utilizing his wits, Ash must take on opponents such as childhood rival Gary and the nefarious Team Rocket to advance. Can Ash become the Pokémon Puzzle Master in this spin-off title?
Pokémon Puzzle League can best be described as Panel de Pon with a Pokémon-themed coat of paint. In other words, anyone that has played Panel de Pon will feel right at home here. Players must arrange blocks in lines of three or more, clearing them as they appear. If the blocks reach the top of the player’s field, the player loses. Both 2D and 3D modes are available, the latter tasking the player with rotating the screen to clear blocks. Additionally, Pokémon Puzzle League can be played with one or two players, who can choose between 15 Pokémon trainers to play as. Such characters include main protagonists Ash, Brock, and Misty, in addition to Lt. Surge, Sabrina, Giovanni, and many more.

While not the most memorable N64 game, Pokémon Puzzle League remains a fine addition to the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack service. In fact, many gamers consider it one of the most memorable Pokémon spin-off titles, presenting the franchise in a new, refreshing way. Pokémon Puzzle League saw new life in 2008 when it was released on the Wii Virtual Console, but since then, it remained dormant. Anyone that’s interested to see what long-time fans are clamoring for will not have to wait any longer to experience it.
Are you excited to play Pokémon Puzzle League on the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack service? Will this be your first time experiencing it, or are you a returning player?
