The Nintendo Switch is already Nintendo’s most successful home console since the Wii and now everything is pointing to changing of the guard with the Switch set to overtake Wii sales.
Remarkable Switch Set to Overtake Wii Sales as Success Continues
Nintendo Switch Heading for Sales Record
You might assume that Nintendo’s highest-selling console would be the NES or SNES. Both of these consoles are incredibly iconic and important pieces of video game history. However, it is the Wii that sits on top of that tree with 101 million units sold. This is largely attributed to its interesting gimmick and wide, casual appeal.
Sales figures released this week have shown that the Switch is set to overtake the Wii soon. According to NintendoLife, the Switch has now sold just short of 93 million units since its 2017 launch.
Like the Wii, its gimmick of being both a handheld and a home console is a huge draw for gamers. The Switch is also home to multiple genre-defining titles such as Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and Super Smash Brothers Ultimate.
In 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons became the best-timed release in video game history. Releasing right at the start of worldwide lockdowns, it gave people the social interaction they were missing. This led to not just huge sales for the game but caused a huge surge in demand for the Switch.
The Switch Will Catch The Wii Soon
Due to the New Horizons craze burning out, Switch sales are down compared to last year. However, there is a barrage of recent and upcoming releases that will drive the Switch over the top.
October saw the release of both Metroid Dread and Mario Party Superstars, both games that long-time fans have been dying for. Still to come are the sequel to Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3, and Metroid Prime 4. These are without mentioning the new Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack bringing back classic Nintendo 64 games.
