The Resident Evil franchise has hooked gamers since the 1990s. The latest entry in the franchise was Resident Evil: Requiem, the ninth mainstream title apart from the spinoff games that fans have grown to love. These “spinoff” games often focus on side stories that branch out from the main timeline titles. However, during recent times when Capcom is busy dishing out RE remakes, fresh RE titles, and brand new IPs like Pragmata, why have they stopped working on spinoff games for their beloved survival horror franchise? Turns out, there’s a big mechanism at play here.
A Disappointing Update For Resident Evil Spin-Offs Fans
The popular horror franchise is showering modern-day fans. From remakes to new titles and DLC story expansions, they are getting everything. But amidst the chaos, some of the loyal community members have noticed the decline of a trend. Fans are asking: Where are the spinoffs? Titles like Resident Evil: Revelations, games that turned into their own mini-series, are nowhere to be found. Whether talking about remakes or new stories, Capcom has appeared to have put a full stop on the spinoff production.
When talking to Nintendo Everything, long-term Capcom employee Masachika Kawata addressed this issue, giving some insider information on why they have stopped working on branching stories altogether.
Maybe there are a lot of people out there who would like to see more spinoff titles or such, but honestly, the team is giving everything it has right now, working on things like our new entries like Requiem or remakes. So honestly, at the moment, that’s where our efforts [are] being focused. We are so focused on pouring our energy into that, I don’t think there’s a whole lot left right now for a spinoff.
At times, remakes of acclaimed video games are not given the same respect as the original titles. Often making the community think whether a remake is a desperate attempt for a studio to stabilize itself financially. Capcom, however, accepts that it needs remakes to keep the resources coming so they can deliver new titles and fresh IPs.
Fans will be able to play another widely loved RE game, reimagined through modern lenses. Resident Evil: Veronica will likely release in 2027 as a remake to 2000’s Code Veronica.
