When Santa Monica Studios revealed God of War Laufey in June 2026, fans were worried about one thing: Where is Kratos? There was a belief in the community that the angry Greek God may disappear from the franchise altogether moving forward, even though all games in this IP have been focused on him until now. While Cory Barlog, the creative director of 2022’s God of War Ragnarok, already assured fans that they will have more Kratos games, he has now revealed that Laufey’s story is not just a filler.
God of War Laufey Serves An Important Part in the Overarching Story
During the God of War Laufey panel at the San Diego Comic-Con 2026, Cory Barlog revealed his vision for the upcoming project. With a release date already on the table, Barlog claimed that the world of the franchise is ever-expanding, with Laufey the Just playing a huge role in carrying the torch until it’s ready to be passed.
Everything we are doing in the Faye game is a continuation of what came before and to set up and expand what comes next.
The Santa Monica Studios executive also implied that Faye isn’t just a filler in the story. She may be a new playable character in the franchise but is far from a spinoff protagonist. Instead, she will lead the God of War fans forward along with her new friends like Phranque the Cube.
Phranque has been around since the beginning. It’s interesting to see how to build this world out. Everything in the game is setting up for something so amazing.
Since Kratos is a protagonist that Barlog and the rest of the team don’t wish to leave behind, he may be the lead in the next project that Santa Monica Studios works on after completing God of War: Laufey. Fans with that collector’s itch will be able to buy a disc edition of the game as well.
