God of War Laufey Will Not Stop Kratos, Assures Creative Director

God of War Laufey Will Not Stop Kratos, Assures Creative Director

Kaif Ali June 10, 2026

God of War: Laufey rightly became one of the most talked-about games after its State of Play reveal this year on June 2. A primary reason for the chatter was the primary protagonist for Santa Monica’s upcoming AAA project. Turns out, despite the title, the game will not focus on everyone’s favorite Greek God of War. Instead, Laufey the Just, the Frost giantess from Jotunheim, and the protector of the Nine Realms, will remain the epicentre of the entire plot in the game.

This stirred up controversy among gaming fans. Some were angry seeing Santa Monica’s shift in perspective, putting Kratos in the backseat. Others, on the other hand, were worried that stories from the Greek god’s perspective had finally concluded when he became the God of “Hope” after the GoW Ragnarok’s free Valhalla DLC. Cory Barlog, however, has something that will reassure the original fans.

Kratos’ Future in the God of War Franchise

Cory Barlog Offers Assurances

Cory Barlog was the game director for the 2018 soft reboot of the franchise. He initiated Kratos’ character development from a rageful monster to a wise, responsible, and stoic father. Then, Cory became the creative director when the production to God of War Ragnarok was kicked off. Now, the new God of War: Laufey game is being helmed by Ariel Lawrence, who has worked on the franchise since the Greek saga. During an in-house interview between Cory Barlog and Ariel Lawrence, the two discussed Kratos’ fate. This is where Cory assured the fans of the franchise that God of War Laufey will not take away their beloved god-killer.

“Faye is, while it’s a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly really want to explore, all of these different characters in there,” said Barlog. “But there’s always going to be Kratos games, like, throughout the whole history. We’re super excited about that.”

“Oh for sure,” continued Ariel Lawrence. “We can’t not tell stories about the big guy.

The last game in the franchise that focused on Kratos was God of War: Sons of Sparta. It was a metroidvania-style game focusing on the Kratos and his younger brother Deimos during their Spartan training. The project received mixed reviews from the players. Some enjoyed a fresh change while others criticized it. But if you are somebody who likes to see the brute Greek on screen, you can still wait for future titles and enjoy Santa Monica’s new creations in the meantime.
