EA Sports FC, Pokemon GO, Mario Kart Tour, and Other Popular Games Come Under Fire for Loot Boxes

Arijit Das October 22, 2026

PEGI is tightening rules for rating games that feature paid random rewards. Due to this, popular games like Pokemon GO, EA Sports FC, and Mario Kart Tour are now considered PEGI 16.

Many popular games that were previously rated PEGI 3, 7, or 12 are now being rated at least PEGI 16.

On 21st October 2026, PEGI officially started updating the age ratings for digital-only games across Europe and the UK. However, this change is not sudden.

Back in March 2026, PEGI officially announced its plans. They started applying the changes to newly submitted games from June 2026.

After months, it is now retroactively punishing older and highly popular games that already exist on digital storefronts.

List of Popular Games That Are Now PEGI 16 Due to Loot Boxes

The affected games are not only getting a higher age rating, but they are also receiving a compulsory ‘Paid Random Items’ warning label on their store pages. Parents will now be able to know exactly why the rating has been increased.

This certainly gives adults clarity on which games they can allow their children to play. However, please note that this policy does not outlaw any games or ban minors from buying them.

Here is the complete list of the popular games that are now PEGI 16:

  • EA Sports FC
  • Overwatch/Overwatch 2
  • League of Legends
  • Pokemon GO
  • Pokemon TCG Pocket
  • Mario Kart Tour
  • Fire Emblem Heroes
  • Zenless Zone Zoro
  • Genshin Impact
  • Brawl Stars
  • Clash Royale

In addition to these, there are other popular digital-only games that are now PEGI 16.

Last Word on Popular Games Now Becoming PEGI 16

This is a change that was needed for a long time. Elements like flashy skins and valuable in-game resources have long persuaded children to purchase items with real money. By slapping a PEGI 16 on popular titles, regulators are now admitting that paying for a random chance at exclusive items shares identical triggers with gambling.
