Nintendo Switch owners have until July 12 to play Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter for free, and given how short that window actually is, this is not one to sit on. The Legend of Heroes series has been around long enough to build a loyal following, and getting the first chapter at no cost is a decent way to find out what the fuss is about without committing money upfront.
Here is everything you need to know to access it before the trial ends.

How To Play Trails In The Sky 1st Chapter For Free Until July 12
The free trial for The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st runs from July 6 to July 12. Two requirements apply to access it: an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription and a Japanese Nintendo account.
For players outside Japan, setting it up is straightforward:
- Create a new Nintendo account and set the region to Japan during setup.
- Activate a Nintendo Switch Online subscription on that account using either a free trial or a one-month subscription.
- Add the Japanese account as a user on your existing Nintendo Switch.
- Download the game directly through the Japanese storefront on that account.
Once downloaded, the game is fully playable on your Nintendo Switch for the duration of the trial.
What to know before the Trails in the Sky free trial ends
The game is a full-length JRPG, so finishing it before July 12 will take your full effort. Fortunately, save data carries over to the purchased version if you decide to buy it after the trial ends.
One important thing to flag: If you activated a new NSO subscription specifically for this, make sure to cancel it before July 12 to avoid being charged for a renewal on the Japanese account. It is an easy thing to overlook and worth setting a reminder for before the trial ends.
