The backrooms have become one of the most popular forms of analog horror on the internet available today. Many content creators and game developers have tried to recreate the unsettling feeling behind getting stuck in a liminal space. But what if you were an action shooter protagonist who got stuck in the backrooms? An upcoming game aims at giving players some offensive powers, expecting them to wipe the floor with anomalies presented in the backrooms. You may not have the plot armor a single-player game protagonist has, but the game has some interesting features that may be worth getting into.

Backrooms With Action and Chaos
Hypercent Inc., the studio behind Backroom Company, which was well received on Steam, has a new backroom project for players to explore. Once again, the studio is returning to its co-op roots, but instead offering more action to the players. The upcoming title being developed and published by Hypercent Inc. is the Backroom Cleaners. This game is eyeing a Q4 release in 2026. Neither the price nor the release date is revealed as of yet. However, interested gamers, horror, and action fans can wishlist it on Steam.
The game is set to be a 4-player co-op adventure. The most eye-catching part of the gameplay reveal trailer was the fact that it has roguelike elements. Meaning there will be power up in each run. So, we can expect some replay variety when jumping into every new session, trying out a different build to “clean” the backrooms.
A popular that comes to mind when thinking of action and backroom horror elements is Control by Remedy studio. The game was a fresh IP but set in the same universe as Alan Wake, working as its sequel in some ways, setting up the second Alan Wake title through a DLC expansion. It takes place in The Oldest House, which is a manifestation of alternate realities. The building keeps on changing as we explore, making it confusing and easy to get lost in, while it houses many horrors beyond human comprehension.
Although Backroom Cleaners does not have the same budget or universe expansion, the game does seem to promise a chaotic fun time with friends who enjoy co-op action and a unique supernatural theme.
