I tuned into yesterday’s Nintendo Direct like a kid on Christmas morning, and man, they delivered. The June 9, 2026 showcase was all about powering up the Nintendo Switch 2 with big ports, exciting first-party updates, and that one announcement that had the entire internet losing it: a full remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. After months of Summer Game Fest hype, Nintendo reminded everyone why they’re still the kings of feel-good gaming. Here’s everything that stood out, plus my honest thoughts.
One Zelda Announcement Helped Nintendo Win the 2026 Summer Wars
The Big Zelda Reveal That Stole the Show
The moment the trailer hit, my jaw dropped. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is getting a full remake built from the ground up for Switch 2. We saw Link exploring a beautifully enhanced Hyrule the Deku Tree looks alive, the combat feels smoother, and that iconic ocarina music is richer than ever. It’s not just a port; it looks like a proper modern re-imagining while keeping the soul of the 1998 classic intact.

If you grew up on N64 like I did, this one hits different. Ocarina basically invented the 3D Zelda formula time travel, master sword pulls, and that unforgettable soundtrack. Releasing this on Switch 2 feels like the perfect “welcome to the new hardware” gift. No firm 2026 date yet, but it’s clearly a priority.
Switch 2 Ports Galore – Third-Party Love Incoming
Nintendo went hard on showing off what the Switch 2 can handle with third-party titles:
• Xenoblade Chronicles Series – Definitive and remastered editions of 1, 2, and 3 coming to Switch 2. Those massive worlds are going to look insane in handheld or docked mode.
• Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Dragon’s Dogma 2, Stellar Blade, Lies of P, and even Kingdom Hearts 4 all confirmed or heavily featured for Switch 2.
This is smart. The Switch 2 is positioning itself as the “play these amazing games anywhere” machine, and these ports prove the hardware has the muscle.
First-Party Highlights & New Games
• Rhythm Heaven: Groove – A brand-new entry in the rhythm series. Expect wacky mini-games and that signature touch-screen (or Joy-Con) fun.
• Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave – New tactics RPG with fresh characters and what looks like deeper storytelling.
• Star Fox – A new demo is already available! Co-op and multiplayer modes shown off in Treehouse Live.
• Other teases included potential updates for Splatoon, Mario, and more.
They also dropped DELTARUNE Chapter 5 news (free update coming June 24) and a bunch of smaller indies and updates.
What This Means for the Rest of 2026
Nintendo isn’t playing small. With GTA 6 looming in November, they’re loading up the Switch 2 with must-play exclusives and strong multiplats to keep momentum going through the holidays. The focus on remakes and enhanced ports is a clear strategy: give new Switch 2 owners instant access to classics while delivering fresh content.

Performance-wise, everything shown looked crisp better textures, faster load times, and solid frame rates even in handheld. If you’ve been on the fence about upgrading from the original Switch, this Direct probably pushed you over the edge.
My Personal Take
As someone who still replays Ocarina every few years, I’m beyond excited. Nintendo knows exactly how to tap into nostalgia without feeling lazy. The Zelda remake alone could carry the second half of the year. I’m also pumped for more Xenoblade on the go those games are epic but perfect for portable sessions.
The Direct wasn’t the longest ever, but it was efficient and packed with things people actually want. No filler, just games.
Stay tuned to Last Word on Gaming for more Nintendo Direct 6.9.2026 coverage.
