Persona 5 The Phantom X Steam Deck Performance Review
The game usually launches without issue, as many Deck players know this can often be the first and toughest test of poorly optimised games. If it does have issues running then you can change to an experimental proton in the settings and hope for the best, for most players though, the game should launch without much fuss.
The actual gameplay looks good and tends to avoid any game-killing lag. You likely won’t have the graphics pause or stutter during key moments which is impressive considering how well-detailed this title is.
Ideally, you will have to adjust the settings in-game with most users noting that the medium settings are perfectly fine for visuals and consistent frame rate. You can also turn off some minor details like reflectors or shadows like in other games to tone down the power usage and get a consistent visual output.
The game’s controls map perfectly, every other Persona game has been a joy on the Deck as they’re made for console and the Phantom X is no difference, there won’t be any problems control-wise with this one.
There is a pretty notable negative that you’ve probably come to expect if you’ve played other Persona games on the portable console. It is quite hard on the battery life of the system, it’ll drain battery much faster than other titles and will only offset this by running on lower settings.
All in all, the Phantom X Steam Deck port has to be considered a win for Deck users. It launches just fine for most users, it has consistent, strong visuals, the controls map well, and it’s just a good game to play. While the battery may cause issues for some it is a necessary evil to get games like this running on the go.
