Top Selling Spyro Game of All Time

Spyro Year of the Dragon – 3.2 Million Units

The third game in the original trilogy of Spyro games sold over 3 million units. The story sees Spyro and his fellow dragons celebrating the “Year of the Dragon” which only occurs every 12 years. The event celebrates new dragon eggs being brought to the realm. The celebration becomes short-lived as the Sorceress’ apprentice, Bianca crashes the party and steals the dragon eggs. She spreads them throughout the realm as Spyro, Sparx, and Hunter are tasked with recovering the eggs.

As Spyro works with various locals and new-found friends Sheila the Kangaroo, Sergeant Byrd the Penguin, Bentley the Yeti, and Agent 9 the Monkey he learns that dragons were banned from the realm by the Sorceress who did not realize they are the source of magic. Her goal is to use the baby dragons to create a spell that would make her immortal. As Bianca learns this, she turns against the Sorceress and helps Spyro and his friends complete their mission.

The game was well received and sold very well both inside and outside of the United States. This was the final Spyro project to be developed by Insomniac and the final Spyro release for the original PlayStation.

Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage! – 3.4 Million Units

The second installment in the original Spyro trilogy sold nearly 3 and a half million units on the original PlayStation. Following the events of the first Spyro game, Spyro is looking to take a well-deserved vacation to get away from the rainy Artisans.

Although Spyro planned to go to Dragon Shores, when he entered the portal he ended up in Glimmer. He was summoned there by Elora the Faun, Hunter the Cheetah, and the Professor who explained they accidentally summoned Ripto, a warlock. Ripto aimed to take over Avalar which caused Elora to deactivate the travel portal by taking the orbs that power the portals and scattering them. Spyro has been summoned to recover the orbs before Ripto can recover them and use the portals to conquer the kingdom of Avalar.

The orbs are not the only item Spyro has to collect on his journey. Each realm he visits has a talisman he has to recover from citizens of different realms to stop Ripto’s conquest. Just as it looks like Ripto is defeated, he surprises Spyro, Elora, and company and takes the crystal that was meant to power the portals. Spyro has to use all of the orbs he has collected to defeat Ripto and stop his reign of terror, finally able to take his vacation to the Dragon Shores.

The game received favorable reviews from critics and built on the sales success of the first game.

Spyro the Dragon – 4.8 Million Units

The first Spyro release got the franchise off to a great sales start with nearly 5 million units sold. The game introduces the main protagonist Spyro and the realm of dragons which is made up of the Artisans, the Peace Keepers, the Magic Crafters, the Beast Makers, and the Dream Weavers.

One day during a television interview two dragons insult banished dragon Gnasty Gnorc who responds by casting a spell that traps every dragon in the realm in crystal. Spyro manages to dodge the curse and now must travel to every realm to free the dragons and recover the gem treasure that was lost as well. With each dragon he frees, he hurts Gnorc’s quest just a bit more. Once the dragons have been freed, Spyro travels to Gnorc’s home and defeats him, ending the tyranny once and for all.

The game was well received and launched as one of the best-known franchises in gaming today.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy – 10 Million Units

Rounding out the list as the top selling Spyro game of all time is the Reignited Trilogy which is a remake of the original trilogy that was developed by Insomniac. The game brought the original trilogy and combined it with the power of the 8th-generation gaming consoles.

The remake stays very true to the originally released games but upgrades the graphics, audio, and other aesthetics. The game sold well with over 10 million units being sold across the variety of platforms it was released on.

Top Selling Spyro Game of All Time – In Closing
