Politician Asks South Korean President to Play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 to Understand War

The release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 has sparked a curious debate that goes beyond video games and into South Korean politics. The reason is the game’s campaign, which depicts an invasion of South Korea by North Korean forces and presents a war scenario that, according to one politician, should serve as a warning to the country’s president.

Call of Duty Reignites Debate Over Tensions Between the Koreas

In a Facebook post published on October 23, Han Dong-hoon recommended that President Lee Jae Myung play Activision’s new game to understand the possible consequences of insufficient military preparedness.

“I recommend that the president play it and experience firsthand the kind of devastation that occurs when defensive preparedness is inadequate,” Han said, according to The Korea Herald.

The politician also said he hoped the images of a destroyed Seoul shown during the campaign would never become anything more than fiction.

Understand the Meaning of Modern Warfare 4 Campaign

The story of Modern Warfare 4 follows a conflict that begins after North Korea launches an offensive against its southern neighbor. Throughout the campaign, players take part in military operations to defend South Korean territory as the fighting intensifies.

The choice of setting has generated controversy in the country. Some critics argue that the game could contribute to increased hostility toward North Korea, especially given the history of tensions between the two nations. Han Dong-hoon, however, disagrees with that interpretation. In his view, the storyline should not be seen as a provocation, but rather as an opportunity to discuss national security.

The politician pointed out that North Korea’s invasion on June 25, 1950, which triggered the Korean War, was a real event. He also argued that military threats remain present and should not be ignored. “Instead of criticizing the game for portraying a North Korean invasion, we need to focus on the issue it raises,” he said.

The criticism also had a political dimension. Han questioned the Lee Jae Myung administration’s approach to national defense and expressed concern over a possible reduction in joint military exercises between South Korea and the United States. According to the politician, maintaining peace depends on military preparedness, rather than simply expecting the other side to avoid confrontation.

The reaction shows how Call of Duty, despite being an entertainment franchise, can become part of discussions surrounding historical events and contemporary conflicts. In the case of Modern Warfare 4, the similarities between its fictional storyline and the real-world tensions on the Korean Peninsula have turned the game into an argument in a broader debate about the direction of South Korea’s national security.
