Attacking the trader comes with its own pros and cons that should be laid out before you decide what to do. The pros are, you gain a decent amount of their cargo. You can get anywhere around 50% of their items if you attack, which could provide you with some great resources for free.
To counter that, you will lose villagers and gain impatience points. This can damage your city in the short and long term in and of itself. In addition, you will have some traders refuse to come to your village while others will come slower, meaning the flow of resources will be a lot slower in the long run.
So, you may get some items but your village will gain a reputation that could be harmful for the long-term so weigh up your options carefully before deciding to attack the trader.
