Resident Evil has become one of the most popular horror franchises in the video game industry. The shared universe among the games creates a web of stories, intertwined and ever-changing. With so many titles in the series- mainstream, spinoffs, and remakes of the original mainstream projects- it’s not easy to pick your favorites. Long-term Resident Evil fans, however, would expect one to rank an original game as their favorite. But the director of the upcoming Resident Evil movie has a shocking choice.
Director Chooses Resident Evil Remakes
In an interview with IGN, Hollywood director Zach Cregger revealed his favorite games in the entire RE franchise. Cregger, 45, is at the helm of the upcoming movie project bringing the horrifying world of Resident Evil to big screens globally. The movie takes place in Raccoon City but tells the story of a new protagonist seemingly unrelated to Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, Claire Redfield, Carlos, or Jill Valentine, who were all in the city around the same time during the viral outbreak.
Even though he is taking the environment of the second mainstream game for his film, Resident Evil 2 is not at the top of his list. Instead, his top five RE games are ranked below, starting from the best:
- Resident Evil 4
- Resident Evil 2
- Resident Evil Requiem
- Resident Evil Village
- Resident Evil 7
The top two games on this list have both original and remade titles. When asked if he is talking about the OG, the remake, or would like to glue them together, Cregger replied:
I’d glue them together, but I’ve spent way more time on the remake.
There is a clear favor for remakes in the franchise from Capcom. However, considering the original charm that the older games had, it’s a surprise that Zach Cregger hasn’t spent much time going through that experience. Unfortunately for all the modern-day Resident Evil fans out there, they won’t be able to play through any spinoffs, as a Capcom employee had earlier confirmed.
Zach Cregger has directed widely acclaimed horror thrillers like Barbarian (2022) and Weapons (2025). His take on Resident Evil hits cinemas on September 18, 2026.
