South of Midnight Steam Deck Performance Analysis

South of Midnight has no issues at launch. For those who play on Steam Deck they’ll know all about the perils of trying to get some games to ever actually launch, particularly those from specific studios or that aren’t optimised. That isn’t an issue this time around and should tell you a bit about how well-optimised this game is.

Visually the game is absolutely stunning on the portable console, it can run pretty seamlessly on some of the medium and higher graphical settings with a consistent frame rate of about 40 FPS. Although you can cap at 30 for a better battery life.

There are however, parts of the game that are a little too strong for the Steam Deck. There’s a particularly dense stretch for about 15 minutes where all combat with completely tank the visuals no matter how low your graphical settings are.

Battery life can be a big issue too. There are some areas where there’s so many details and so much life that the battery will drain very quickly, this happens a lot in the world where there’s vast bodies of water or heavily forested areas.

The game is thus a bit of a mixed bag in terms of the Steam Deck version. While it can run very well and hold beautiful graphical standards, it can also dip heavily and drain the battery leaving to some visual problems. It can also be a heavy drain on the battery life which is a problem for some Deck users. Thankfully, the game does at least function and won’t likely crash, you can also avoid a lot of the combat in the game if you’d rather a smoother experience focused on platforming and storytelling with nice visuals.
