It’s no secret that Crimson Desert’s story might be the weakest part of the experience, a facet that even the developers have acknowledged with the promise of a more cohesive narrative to come in upcoming updates to the game (although it all makes sense if you do a bit of light reading in the Axiom Archives). Of course, a side effect of that weak narrative is that Damiane and Oongka feel a tad superficial as playable protagonists thanks to their backstories being largely neglected. However, that may be about to change.

Crimson Desert’s DLC Could Add Backstory for Key Characters
Interesting Insights Potentially On The Way
Pearl Abyss has clearly been paying attention to what all of us have been saying about the things we’d like to see in Pywel ever since the game has been around. Every update has brought meaningful changes to the open world and gameplay loop, making each one feel like an evolution of a mechanic or UI element that was previously a pain point. However, it seems that the studio is holding a few aces up its sleeve, and isn’t shying away from giving credit to all the player feedback it has received over the past few months.
A common pain point among fans of both Damiane and Oongka has been that their stories feel distinctly half-cooked in comparison to Kliff’s, which was already sort of lacking to begin with. However, an interview with IGN has shed a little light on plans to remedy the situation, with the team looking to “put more meat on the bones of the story”, with a special mention about plans to give us a bit more to go on about how Damiane and Oongka came to be involved with the main events. In case you haven’t uncovered it yet, Damiane fled to Hernand to escape a Demenissian conspiracy that had her swordmaster killed, while Oongka was just…there from the very first moment you dive in.

Could the upcoming DLC be the perfect stage for us to see more about what makes these two very interesting characters tick? We certainly think it’s logical to assume so. We’re still going to wait on an official announcement before we bring out the champagne, but given that Pearl Abyss is on a roll as far as giving players what they want is concerned, that’s a bet we’d be happy to take.
It’s going to be a rather nasty slice of humble pie if we’re wrong, but we’re quite confident that there’s something in the works for a pair of woefully underutilized protagonists.
