Crashlands 2 Steam Deck Performance Review
Crashlands 2 offers no problems at launching. As other Deck users will know some games are tricky to even launch on the console. This is usually an indication on how well, or how poorly, the game is optimised for the device. Crashlands 2 launches without any problems whatsoever and gave me hope of an easy ride.
The game is visually stunning on the portable console. It can run pretty high FPS consistently. Even with no cap you can run at near full FPS during the entire game, combat doesn’t appear to throw that off, nor does the screen shake impact from some of the explosions. That alone is exceptional. The vibrant colours and textures of the game come through very well.
The control scheme maps perfectly to the joypad with the gameplay being very intuitive on the console’s D-pad and buttons, it can also be mapped to advance dialogue with some of the back buttons which makes for a more efficient time.
Speaking of the dialogue, there are options to increase the size of the text which means even the smaller screen of this console can be read by players. Small text on poorly optimised games is one big issue for Deck users but that isn’t a problem with Crashlands 2.
One thing is that the highest graphics will eat the system’s battery a bit, luckily the game looks good with a cap of both 60 and 45 FPS. I do find that going lower makes the visuals really dull and takes away from some of the game’s appeal but it still looks good at 45 if you want to save some battery life while playing.
To round up, this is a very strong port to the Steam Deck. The game looks good, can be optimised, and maps well to the control scheme. It launches without issue and doesn’t have any noted instances of lag or crashing in game due to strain being put on the console.
