Hideo Kojima Signs New Xbox Exclusivity Deal After PlayStation Cancels PHYSINT

Andre Custodio September 10, 2026

One of the industry’s most unexpected partnerships has just gained a new chapter. Xbox has announced that it has expanded its agreement with Kojima Productions and will publish PHYSINT, Hideo Kojima’s new action-espionage game that was originally being developed in partnership with PlayStation.

Sony Kicks Hideo Kojima to the Curb Without Warning?

The change came after Sony decided to walk away from the project. In a message posted on social media, Kojima explained that he received a notice from SIE in mid-June informing him that the company intended to cancel PHYSINT, which was already in production. Considering the project important to both himself and his studio, the director spent the next three months looking for a new partner before reaching an agreement with Xbox.

The new deal expands an existing relationship. Kojima Productions and Xbox are already working together on OD, a horror experience being developed using Microsoft’s cloud technologies and featuring Jordan Peele among its collaborators. The partnership will now include PHYSINT and is also expected to extend to projects related to film and television.

PHYSINT was announced in January 2024 during a State of Play presentation featuring Hideo Kojima and Hermen Hulst. At the time, the project was described as a new generation of “action espionage,” a genre closely associated with Kojima’s career through his work on Metal Gear. The goal is to use cutting-edge technology and a cast of actors to further blur the line between video games and cinema.

More details about the production were later revealed, with Charlee Fraser, Ma Dong-Seok, and Minami Hamabe confirmed as part of the cast. Despite this, virtually nothing from the actual gameplay has been shown so far.

Xbox did not specify PHYSINT’s platforms in its announcement, so it is still too early to say exactly how its exclusivity will work or whether it will be released on other systems. What has been confirmed is that the project is still alive and will now be published by Xbox.

Last Word on PHYSINT

The move is particularly notable because of Kojima’s history with PlayStation. In the original announcement, the director himself emphasized that he and Sony had helped develop the action-espionage genre together for nearly 30 years. PHYSINT even appeared to be designed to celebrate that relationship, combining Kojima’s experience in games with Sony’s presence in film and music.

For Xbox, then, there is considerable symbolic weight in taking over a project that was born from that partnership. More importantly, however, PHYSINT will not have to be abandoned following PlayStation’s decision. For anyone waiting for Kojima to return to the kind of ideas that made him famous with Metal Gear, that is probably the most important news to come out of this entire story.
