Formations

The 4-2-3-1 is as powerful as ever in this year’s game with just about any configuration not needing much tweaking to be successful. It has been joined this year by the 4-3-3 which can be configured in at least two ways to be uber-successful and score a lot of goals.

Mentality

Most of the time, with FM24 your best bet is to alternate between Positive, Attacking, or even Ultra Attacking. I have had my most success using attack-minded teams in both the 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3.

Tactics

With both settings, your best bet is likely to set up as a gegenpress. This works incredibly well in the 4-2-3-1 and can work well with the 4-3-3. For both formations you’ll also want to play with a high line to squeeze the pitch and keep the other team trapped. You will also want to prevent short distribution so the other team is either forced to pass into danger or you recycle the ball by winning a header on the long pass.

With attacking settings as well as this endless onslaught of pressing you will pretty easily be able to take advantage of the match engine in this year’s game.

With the 4-2-3-1 the new meta is to use inverted full-backs. These basically pull into midfield and pair up with a DM to add another body to keep possession and allows one DM to foray forward to help press higher.

Another basic is to set your team to make low crosses. This mirrors the real life trend that’s grown where wingers fizz low balls into the box instead of playing crosses, this is more likely to result in a goal in this year’s game than playing in to a big target man.

Players You Need

Both formations do require some specialist buys that you’ll need to get right. First things first, mobile, tall CBs who are at the very least decent on the ball are essential to making the high-line gegenpress work.

You’ll also need a goalkeeper who can operate as a sweeper to make this work to its fullest ability. There’s no shortage of decent shot-stoppers who have decent passing or kicking stats thankfully,

Last thing is with strikers it is good to have one with high anticipation. When playing low crosses it will benefit your wingers if the striker can anticipate where the ball will come, this makes it more likely to connect and lead to a shot on target.

Final pointer, wingers who can dribble are pretty standard for making the 4-3-3 work (less so for the 4-2-3-1).
